HS^2 ALUMNUS DESIGNS COURTYARD AT KMHS!!! Sometimes, a project comes full circle in the most unexpected ways. Austin Ryan, a 2020 Kettle Moraine graduate, recently returned to his former school to help transform the courtyard he once dreamed about as a student.

The story began with a chance encounter at Mama D’s Coffee Shop, where Austin ran into one of his former teachers, Mrs. Mau. She mentioned that the courtyard was in need of significant attention and encouraged him to stop by and take a look. Austin eventually provided a quote for the project and returned this spring to complete the work as a landscape designer.

There was an extra connection to the project that made the work even more meaningful. During his time at Kettle Moraine, Austin participated in a special end-of-term class in which students were asked to create landscape plans for the courtyard. At the time, the space was largely weeds with little structure, and students developed their own visions for what it could become. Austin's design wasn't the one selected, but he never could have imagined that years later, he would return as a professional landscape designer to help bring the courtyard into its next chapter.

It's a wonderful reminder that the experiences students have at Kettle Moraine can come full circle in ways they never expect.

AP CAPSTONE AWARDS!!! Congratulations to our 2026 AP Capstone Award recipients: Connor Foy, Tommy Marlock, Henry Stabelfeldt, and Breleigh Wojtowicz! AP Capstone is a two-year College Board program that develops research, analysis, evidence-based argument, collaboration, writing, and presentation skills through two year-long courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Students earn the AP Capstone Diploma by successfully completing both courses and four additional AP exams during high school. AP exams have the potential to save KM students significant college tuition costs. Based on last year’s test-takers, AP exams potentially saved KM students in grades 9–12 approximately $1.5 million in tuition. KM encourages students to challenge themselves through AP coursework and currently offers 21 AP courses, with more under consideration. Opportunities span art, computer science, English, math, music, science, social studies, and more. AP Parent Night is also a great opportunity for 7th and 8th grade families to learn about pre-AP opportunities and begin preparing for high school. Join us October 7 from 7:00–8:00 p.m. to learn more about AP opportunities at KMHS, or visit kmsd.edu/ap.
